Nigeria’s foremost
telecommunications company, Globacom, has charged Nigerian youths to embrace
indigenous culture and tradition, even as the company felicitated with the
people of Ijebu Ode on the occasion of this year’s Ojude Oba Festival.
Globacom in a statement from
its head office in Lagos, said Nigerian youths need to strive to strengthen the
unity of the country by showing interest in the history of the different
communities that make up Nigeria with a view to gaining greater understanding
about their beneficial cultures and traditions.
Globacom, the main sponsor of
the Ojude Oba festival, noted that the theme of the 2017 celebration, Ojude
Oba: A Rich Heritage For Ijebu Unity, reinforces the truism
that traditions, cultures and religious beliefs are key ingredients for uniting
people.
“We owe the present
generation and posterity the responsibility to join forces with men and women
of goodwill to sustain the renewed drive towards the historical and cultural
renaissance of our country”, Globacom said in the statement.
The company pledged its
continued support for any initiative aimed at promoting the culture and
tradition of Nigerian people, adding that this is one reason it has continued
to partner with the Ojude Oba Festival Committee for the celebration of the
authentic culture of the Ijebu people.
The telecommunications
company also pledged to continue to provide world-class voice and data
infrastructure that would enable all Nigerians to communicate seamlessly within
the nation and across the world.
In his own remarks at the
Ojude Oba Festival, the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona,
commended Globacom and its Chairman, Dr. Mike Adenuga, Jr., for their support
for the festival for 11 years running.
He said Globacom’s unwavering
support for indigenous culture and traditions will be rewarded by posterity,
even as he prayed for the continued success of the company.
Globacom’s sponsorship of
Ojude Oba this year covers Regberegbe and Baloguns’ competitions in which
the Bobamayegun, Bobagbimo and Jagunmolu Okunrin Asiwaju came first,
second and third respectively. In the female category, Arobayo, Bobagunte
and Gbobaniyi .emerged winners in the first, second and third places winning
N500, 000, N300, 000 and N200, 000 respectively. In the Balogun competition,
the Kuku, Shoye and Alatise families came first, second and third
respectively.
As usual, the company’s
contribution to the success of this year’s edition of the festival includes a
music fiesta at Equity Resort in Ijebu Ode, featuring the immensely talented
hip-hop king, Innocent Ujah Idibia popularly known as Tuface and Fuji exponent,
Saheed Osupa.
Other attractions included a
beauty pageant also sponsored by Globacom. Miss Afolabi Mariam won the
competition and was crowned Miss Ojude Oba 2017, while Obadiya Oluwasanumi
and Miss. Adeniyi Oluwabukola emerged first and second runners-up,
respectively.
