Don’t Force Careers On Your Children, Prof Johnbull Counsels Parents

Parents have been advised to discard the habit of forcing their children and wards to pursue particular professions without considering passion and ability of such children.

This is the message in this week’s edition of Globacom’s TV Drama Series, Professor Johnbull, showing at 8.30 p.m. on Tuesday on NTA Network, NTA International on DSTV Channel 251 and NTA on StarTimes.

Tagged Career Choices, the episode is a detailed examination of   the issue of career selection for children with a lot of useful advice on what parents and guardians as well as career counsellors in public and private schools can do to help their children and wards choose their career.

Nollywood actor, Kanayo O. Kanayo,  who plays the role of Professor Johnbull, the protagonist of the series, counsels against the imposition of careers on children by parents who fail to consider the passion and talents of such children.

A scenario plays out in the episode where Old Captain, a new character in the Series, tries to compel his son, Chukwuilodibe, to become a footballer, whereas the young man wants to become a biology teacher. Professor Johnbull intervenes to prevent this, saying that the success of any career is not determined by the amount of money made butby the professional’s career fulfillment and satisfaction.

His stand is supported by the other actors in the episode such as Olaniyi (Yomi Fash-Lanso), Mai Doya (Funky Mallam), Etuk (Imeh Bishop) and the professor's daughter, Elizabeth (Queen Nwokoye) as they all agree that it is wrong for parents to impose careers on their children based on the background of the parents.

Career Choices brings to the fore the reasons why parents prefer some careers to others, and viewers will see that it is mostly because some people had succeeded in such careers in the past. However, Professor Johnbull faults such presumptions, arguing that "there are unsuccessful footballers, unsuccessful pilots and unsuccessful medical doctors".

In his view, parents’ roles in fashioning out careers for their children should stop at exposing the children, through education and counselling, to a wide array of opportunities, and, thereafter, the children should be allowed to pursue careers for which they have the talent and passion.

Other characters in Professor Johnbull who feature in Career Choices include Abadnego (Martins Nebo), Samson (Ogus Baba), Flash (Stephen Odimgba) and the new members of Professor Johnbull's household, Nje (Angela Okorie) and Jeroboam, a.k.a. Boam (Osita Iheme).

The repeat broadcast of Career Choices will be aired at 8.30 p.m. on Friday on the mentioned channels.
