Fiona Asiedu started a petition to help cover the costs of her
Masters degree at Harvard University in the US
Stormzy has made one fan’s dreams come closer
to reality after donating £9,000 to help fund her course at Harvard University.
South
London student Fiona Asiedu started a Crowdfunding page in a bid to raise the
£12,000 she needed to complete a Masters degree in human development and
psychology at the famed US institute, after completing her undergrad in
experimental psychology at the University of Oxford.
“As a
young black woman, from an inner city, working class background, this is such
an amazing opportunity," she said alongside her petition, which is called
#SW2Harvard .
"Ultimately,
I believe that this will encourage young people from similar backgrounds to
aspire for greatness and reach their full potential! I really do hope that I am
able to make my vision into a reality WITH YOUR HELP!”
But she had no idea the plea for help
would reach grime superstar Stormzy ’s
attention or go viral after he pledged a generous £9,000 to help Fiona reach
her target.
Stormzy saw
Fiona’s request when a friend of the student’s sent him a tweet asking if he’d
be able to help with the fundraising – Stormzy replied by not only retweeting
the appeal but also dipping into his own pocket.
Although
it appears he tried to remain incognito, pledging his £9,000 under an anonymous
name, it was clear to Fiona who her mystery donor was and she couldn’t be more
grateful.
Fiona's
thrilled friend, who shared the initial Crowdfunding link online, reached out
to Stormzy with an offer of thanks he couldn’t refuse – dinner for two at
Nando’s!
“Let me
take you to Nando’s for a thank you chicken because this is all you,” she told
Stormzy, after Fiona confirmed she’d reached her fundraising target.
“Deal!”
he replied.
Fiona
then returned to her Crowdfunder page to say after “overwhelming response” she
had upped her target to £14,000, and anything raised above that would be put
towards a foundation she wants to set up supporting black British students from
low income families attending Oxford or Harvard.
Stormzy
isn't the first celebrity to help fund a fan's education this year.
In April, model Chrissy Teigen shocked a US student by paying $6,000 to cover her beauty school costs after
coming across Mercedes Edney's petition online.
Chrissy's
donation was posted to the crowdfunding page with the message: “I’ve seen this
be your passion for such a long time now. So excited to see you fulfil your
dream!”
"THANK
YOU SOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH!! @ chrissyteigen I don't even know how else to thank you
right now," wrote Mercedes in return.
"Thank
you so much! I am on the phone with my mom and sister and telling them. I love
you and I appreciate you. You can never know how much this means to me. I am
going to the school tomorrow to pay it!"
Chrissy
replied: "I'm really excited for you to live out your passion."
