You Can’t Teach In A University Without A PhD in Ghana - Minister

Education Minister, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh

The Education Minister Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh has said that the government will not allow people without a PhD to teach in any university in the country.

The Minister was speaking when he took his turn at the ‘Meet the Press’ series on Tuesday (November 20, 2018).
Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh said that: “now if you do not hold a PhD, you will not be able to teach in a university."
He, however, conceded that the lecturers in the colleges of education are not PhD holders. He said that they will be giving time to develop.
“But most of the lecturers in our colleges of education do not hold PhD. So, we are giving them time to improve their knowledge through the British government support.”

According to the Minister, this decision is to ensure that the universities develop the capacity of teachers in the colleges of education.
Dr Prempeh was hopeful that if the lecturers of the colleges of education were part of the university, they could get assistance in obtaining their PhDs.
He said this measure put in place is to help improve the learning of students and teaching as well.

"Every capacity improvement will inure to the benefit of Ghanaian schoolchildren to improve their learning outcomes."
