Tanitoluwa Adewumi just said checkmate.
Despite learning the game a little over a year ago, the 8-year-old boy — homeless refugee from Nigeria — was crowned the New York State Primary Chess Champion in the kindergarten-to-third-grade bracket of the 52nd New York State Scholastic Championships. The elementary school student, better known as “Tani,” went undefeated at the championships, where he outsmarted opponents from top private schools with pricey chess tutors.
“I want to be the youngest grandmaster,” Tani told the New York Times
Tani is well on his way to achieving that goal, as the third-grader has already established an unwavering dedication to improving his chess prowess. His mother, Oluwatoyin Adewumi, reportedly takes him to free three-hour practice sessions in Harlem every Saturday, while his father, Kayode, allows him to play chess online on his laptop each evening.
“He is so driven,” his school chess teacher, Shawn Martinez told the New York Times.“He does 10 times more chess puzzles than the average kid. He just wants to be better.” Martinez estimates that the youngster could achieve the chess master title in one to two years. The youngest chess grandmaster to-date earned the prestigious title at the age of 12.

‘Teachers To Be Highest Earners In New Salary Scheme’ – FG

Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu
The Federal Government (FG) announced on Thursday that plans are already underway to ensure workers of the teaching profession are the highest paid in the civil service.
The FG explained this would help attract the best brains to the teaching profession.
This pledge was made by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, during the inauguration of the Governing Councils of twenty-one Federal Colleges of Education.
Adamu, who was represented by Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Anwukah, said the teaching profession had ceased to be “all-comers affairs.”
He warned that teachers in Nigeria across all levels must register with the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) before the end of this year or risk being sent out of classrooms.
Adamu said the government had understudied Malaysia and came to the realisation that the country got it right by first taking a critical look at teaching and teacher education.

Dr. Dre Brags About Daughter Getting Into USC ‘On Her Own’ After $70 Million Donation

Dr. Dre just took a not-so-veiled shot at Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman amid the college admissions scam.
On Saturday, the music mogul proudly shared a photo revealing that his 18-year-old daughter, Truly Young, got admitted to the University of Southern California, while also poking fun at the dozens of parents who face litigation after allegedly paying to help their children get into some of the country’s most prestigious schools.
“My daughter got accepted into USC all on her own. No jail time!!!” the rapper-turned-producer wrote in the caption of a photo of himself and his daughter proudly showing off her acceptance letter.
However, some took issue with the dig at the college admissions scandal  — Dre, real name: Andre Young, has also made a huge (legal) contribution to USC in recent years. He and Beats Electronics co-founder Jimmy Iovine donated a whopping $70 million to the prestigious school in 2013. The money was a gift intended to help build an academy — the USC Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation — for undergraduate students whose interests span fields such as marketing, business entrepreneurship, computer science and engineering, audio and visual design, and the arts. The program’s goal is to prepare them to become a new generation of inspired innovators.
