…becomes the US's biggest selling album of the year
The singer’s third album, now also the fastest-selling in the UK, sold more than 3m copies in its first full week of releaseAdele’s 25 has become the year’s biggest-selling album in the US, with a record 3.38m copies sold in its first full week of release.
The tally for 25 is the largest for an album since Nielsen began tracking sales in 1991.
The first-week sales for Adele’s third album puts the singer at the head of an elite club of artists, including Britney Spears, Whitney Houston, Eminem and Lady Gaga, whose albums have debuted with more than 1m US copies.
Last week, it took just four days for 25 to break the 15-year-old first-week sales record held by *NSync’s No Strings Attached.
The US record comes after Adele also broke the UK record for first-week sales, selling 800,307 – more than the combined total for the last 19 albums to top the Britain chart, the Official Charts Company said, and breaking a record set by Oasis’s third album Be Here Now, which sold 696,000 copies in its first week of sale back in 1997.
Lukewarm reviews have not stopped fans from downloading 25 or buying it on CD. They have been forced to buy it as XL, Adele’s label, has kept the album off streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music and Google Play.
Last week, Adele announced a European stadium tour starting in February.
