Rap or HipHop music is known for its political messages. In
2018, Childish Gambino rocked the
boat with his highly successful viral video, ‘This Is America’ which has recorded over 400 million YouTube views. The song addresses the wider issue
of gun violence in the United States, the high rate of mass shootings in the
United States, along with longstanding racism and discrimination against
African Americans.
The song inspired some other covers among which are Falz ‘This Is Nigeria’ (pulled over 15
million YouTube views) and I-NZ’s ‘This Is Iraq (has over 4 million YouTube
views). Falz song touched on issues peculiar to Nigeria and later sparked
up a row between the artistes and the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) who
threatened to drag the artiste to court. The video was endorsed by American
rapper and enterpreneur, Sean Combs (aka P. Diddy).
Dubai based Iraqi rap artiste, I-NZ also went ahead to
record his own version ‘This is Iraq’. I-NZ, a 33-year-old Iraqi-Kiwi whose
real name is Majid, sought to use Gambino’s song to send a message to the world
about what has happened to his country of heritage since the US invasion.
