Parents Of Expelled Redeemer's University Student Leader Threaten Legal Action Against Varsity

The parents of Debo Adedayo, a final year student of Redeemer’s University expelled for his post on social media, has threatened to institute legal action against the University for wrongful termination of their son’s studentship.

Adedayo made this known in series of post made on his Facebook page on Friday. He also explained that contrary to the reason given for his expulsion, he has never ridiculed Redeemer’s University in any way; either in his actions or posts on social media.

According to the expulsion letter, Adedayo was accused of “posting certain messages on some social media platforms which are offensive and portrayed the Redeemer’s University and some of its officials in a bad light.”

“The above is unbecoming of a product of the University where degrees are awarded based on character and learning. By the rules and regulations guiding students conduct in Redeemer’s University, the act constitutes serious misconduct which is punishable by expulsion,” the letter stated.

The Redeemed Christian Church of God owned university, however, recommended “Recovery of Destiny (ROD)” program for the expelled student if he is remorseful and repentant.

In the controversial post said to have been directed at the University, Redeemer’s University was neither mentioned nor any university at all. The post, however, mentioned a “daddy VC and directors of DSSD in some universities like that, who had zero impact except for hatred, bitterness. and negativity”.

Adebayo, who was recently nominated for the City People Award, said it came as a surprise to him when he received a letter on October 12 informing him of his expulsion, particularly on the allegation that he made negative posts about the University.

“I wrote my final exams, defended my projects and was awaiting convocation when I was summoned by the management of the University saying I posted certain things that put the university in a bad light. In all my posts, I never mentioned the name of the University nor the name of any of her officials. Yet on the 12th of this month, I received a letter of expulsion for this supposed reason," he said. 

He went further to say the only reason for the perceived victimization would be because of his constant agitation for the better welfare of the students.

“I am trying to understand the reason behind this action by the management of the university. Could it be because, for the first time in history, my administration refused to give the Vice Chancellor and Director of Students Affairs awards on our students' appreciation day as we reached the conclusion that they did not deserve it? Could it be because my administration fought passionately for students’ rights; food, water, light scarcity? Could it be because I stood for the rights of students when they were falsely accused of defrauding the University,” Adedayo said.

Since the news went viral on social media, there have been different opinions on the issue. While some feel that Adebayo was being victimized by an intolerant management, others are of the opinion that he might have taken the criticism too far even though he claimed not to have mentioned any school.
