The Nigeria Community Excellence Awards is by far the biggest,
most prestigious, most glamorous and the only major rallying annual event
within the community that brings together officials of the Nigerian Government
from Nigeria, the Nigeria High Commission and Consulate, members of Nigerian
community in South Africa, representatives of Nigerian associations and
corporate South Africa as well as South African citizens and members of the
African Diaspora. All of these in a view to celebrate and award excellence as
well as savour Nigerian-made entertainment, culture, and cuisine. The event is
endorsed by the High Commission of Nigeria-Pretoria and the Consulate General
of Nigeria-Illovo, Sandton.
For more than 3 decades now, the name Nigeria and the individuals
known as Nigerians have unabatedly been vilified and exemplified as everything
bad and corrupt. The few black sheep of the Nigerian family and their
dishonourable activities have and are continually being used to represent the
whole which is a misrepresentation of the number of winners, champions, and
achievers in great human endeavours globally. Unfortunately, our millions of
Nigerian brand ambassadors are like an ostrich that has buried its head in the
sand because of the collective shame brought upon them. Our strength is played
down and our weaknesses celebrated beyond our borders.
In response to address these issues from a media standpoint; The
Nigerian Voice Newspaper South Africa was birthed. Leveraging on the
far-reaching and agenda-setting power of the media, we began to set our own
narrative and telling Nigerian stories as they ought to be.
To this noble objective, the Nigerian Community Excellence
Awards event was created in 2017 and the awards ceremony will be celebrating
its 3rd edition on Saturday 12th October 2019.
The event represents the best of the best in the community and
is a celebration of excellence within the Nigerian community living in South
Africa as we cherish our common heritage as a people of a great nation in the
Diaspora. The Nigerian Community Excellence Awards is also to create a platform
for unity, cultural exchange and social cohesion with our host community and
friends of Nigeria in South Africa. Our standards are high and unmatched as we
continue to set new benchmarks for excellence, innovation, and vision.
The Highlight of this year’s event will be the cultural display
of the popular and colourful Adamu Orisa Play (Eyo Masquerade) as well as the
Igbo traditional Masquerade; a first of its kind in South Africa.
Our host this year is South African Lerato Charlotte Letsoso a
Radio and Television Presenter; a Public Speaker; Producer and Writer alongside
South African based Nigerian media and entertainment personality Yomi Atere
popularly known as Yomi Frozen.
