Camp
Auditions to select
aspiring singers for the next stage of the X Factor competition have ended,
with a total of 135 people selected from Abuja, Port Harcourt, Lagos, Kumasi
and Accra.
Over 15,000
singers participated in the auditions, with Lagos having the highest figure of
over 5,000 participants.
Globacom’s Head of Reality Shows, Sulyman Bello, said the shortlisted contestants will now move to the next
stage of the competition, the Boot camp, which opens on Monday, June
3, and closes on Tuesday, June 4.
Successful candidates
from the Boot Camp will thereafter progress to the next stage which is the
Judge’s Home Visits scheduled for Wednesday, June 5 to Friday June 8. The
judges are popular rapper Jude Abaga, widely known as M.I, father of Hip-life
music, Ghana’s Reggie Rockstone, and veteran singer, Onyeka Onwenu. During the
Home Visits, the judges will further asses the contestants to prune them down.
Bello explained that
the top 9 Acts from this level of competition will then move on to the next
stage which is the live performances and eviction through voting by members of
the public.
Rated as the world’s
biggest singing reality TV show, X Factor has been held in several countries including
the United Kingdom, United States, Albania, Argentina, Australia, Belgium,
Denmark, France, Germany and Spain. This is, however, the first time it has
come to Africa courtesy of Globacom.
GLO X FACTOR JUDGES: Reggie Rockstone, Onyeka Onwenu and MI |
Unlike other singing
reality shows, X Factor is designed to find new talents irrespective of age. It
is also the only format where judges also double as mentors and compete against
each other, which ultimately leads to more excitement and, most importantly,
ensures that the best talent emerges winner at the end of the day.
The N24 million (USD
150,000) cash prize being offered by Globacom is the biggest prize money for
similar shows in Africa. The winner will also get a recording contract with the
internationally acclaimed label, Sony Music.
